BIO

Lucy Manly is an avid plein-air oil painter, approaching landscapes head on and interpreting the emotions and experiences of the location onto her canvas. Born in Germany to Polish-Ukrainian parents in 1947, Lucy’s family emigrated to Ontario in 1950 where Lucy would discover her interest for art. She studied in Peterborough with John Norton and David Bierk at Kenner Collegiate and laster with Eric Loder and Edwin Matthew at Sir Sandford Fleming College. She capped off her art and painting studies with the Fine Arts Administration Course at the College and Contemporary Art Theory at Trent University. Painting full time since 1990, Lucy is always painting on location, no matter the season. In the open air, exploring the country is where Lucy draws most of her inspirations. Exploring the areas near and far from her home in Perterborough County, she searches for subjects that hold the traditional landscape of the area, rural life, or the vast and wild wilderness of the North. She looks for subjects that leave strong impacts through their character, working fast to capture the scene as it appeared that day, that hour, when Lucy was observing it. Painting and teaching has led to Lucy travelling across Canada, the United States, Mexico and abroad in France, Italy, and Russia. She served as Artist-in-Residence at Bon Echo Provincial Park painting its landscapes and famous Mazinaw Rock. She is also an active member of the East Central Ontario Art Association, joining in 1979 and serving as President today. Her work has won many local juried awards and is regularly on display in the Art Gallery of Peterborough.
