Douglas Purdon

BIO

Douglas Purdon an incredibly talented painter of rural Canadian landscapes, but also a gifted educator. A lifelong Toronto resident, he graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD) and now gives popular lectures and workshops at the University of Toronto, Loyalist College, and other private groups. He also is an educational and technical advisor for Winsor & Newton. Doug has been personally honoured with the Excellence in Teaching Award in Arts & Science by the University of Toronto in 2012. Doug published the best-selling book Colour Secrets for Glowing Oil Paintings in 1998, which is still purchased and providing both aspiring and experienced artists invaluable guidance. His paintings have appeared in International Artist Magazine and numerous other publications. He is an elected member of The Society of Canadian Artists and The Ontario Society of Artists. Primarily working in oil but dabbling in acrylic and watercolour, Doug’s honest to reality landscapes carry a storybook quality to them, able to communicate the history of a run-down barn or beached ship. His work captures the atmosphere of his scenes so well that the canvas feels like a window to the scene, communicating the emotion of the image to the viewer. Doug’s work has earned him a multitude of awards, graced the covers and pages of magazines, and been included in The Society of Illustrators in Los Angeles among many other honours. His paintings are in the permanent collections of Mystic Seaport, Scottish National Tourist Board, Toronto Public Library, City of Toronto, Card Lake Resources, Co-operators Insurance Canada, and The Arts and Letters Club of Toronto.
